Alzheimer's Care in NYC

Caring for your loved one with Alzheimer's

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer’s disease affects about 5.1 million Americans aged 60 and above. Once this condition strikes, your elderly loved ones may start showing signs of increasing forgetfulness, decreased cognitive abilities, mild confusion, mood swings and personality changes. Over time, their condition may worsen until it reaches a point when they can no longer function normally. When this time comes, you will definitely need someone who can help you provide the appropriate Alzheimer’s care for your aging family member.

The Three Stages of Alzheimer's Disease
Early Stage

In the early stages of Alzheimer’s, people may experience slight changes to their thought processes, but emotional changes aren’t always apparent. Acting as the primary caregiver, you can help your family member by tracking medications, keeping appointments or even to recalling words, names and events. Encourage them to live as independently as possible.

Mid Stage

As Alzheimer’s progresses, you’ll find it necessary to take on more of their daily tasks. You’ll probably see more emotional changes in the later stages and have to help your loved one deal with them. You may find that you’re having to structure your loved one’s day more than before as you help them. Reach out to others giving Alzheimer’s care in New York.

End Stage

In the end stages of Alzheimer’s, a caregiver’s duties are much more involved. At this stage you’ll find that you need to hire professionals trained in Alzheimer’s care. During this period, you’ll likely have to help your loved one to complete even the simplest of tasks – like feeding themselves and keeping themselves clean. It’s in this stage that the disease affects patients the most in the physical sense.
