Caring for a loved one with cancer

Cancer & Hospice Care

“You have Cancer” are the three words you never want to hear. It is very critical to have the support of family and friends, however it can be very difficult to provide the right type of support. Often as the loved one, we go in to a mode of wanting to fix everything. This can be challenging to not only yourself but your loved one who had been diagnosed with cancer. Finding the right ways to provide the support that you all need it the first step in dealing with cancer.

What should you do when you learn that your elderly family member is suffering from a terminal illness and has less than six months to live? Well for one thing, you need to choose the best hospice caregivers in order to provide the best possible care for your aging loved one. Doing so helps to guarantee that he or she can live the rest of their remaining days with peace, comfort and dignity. Allowing your elderly loved ones to spend their last days in their own homes and with the ones they love can be of the best things you can ever do for them.

Hospice Caregivers – How Can They Help You?

Hospice caregivers for the elderly are trained to enhance the quality of life of terminally ill patients by controlling their symptoms and relieving their pain. They also provide emotional, social and spiritual support to not only your elderly loved one but your whole family as well, providing guidance with the difficult issues and providing respite care so that the primary family caregiver can have some time to his or her self.

Choosing the Best Hospice Caregivers for the Elderly

Given the importance of hospice care, here are some of the most important factors that you may need to consider for knowing who to go with:

  • Certification and licensure. Choose a hospice care provider that is licensed by your State.
  • Level and quality of care offered. You should choose the hospice caregiver who has the experience needed to give your elderly loved one the level and quality of care that he or she needs.
  • Personal recommendations. Ask around for recommendations or do some online search for the best hospice caregivers in your area. If you meet someone you think would be a good fit then make sure to ask for credentials.
Hospice is a special way of providing care for people who are terminally ill (normally 6 months or less) providing care and support for them and their families. The hospice program serves individuals with ANY terminal illness including Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.  Hospice can provide 24-hour care and assists the family in managing the individual’s care.
Palliative care is patient and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and treating suffering.  It addresses the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient and family in order to enhance the quality of life for both.  It is appropriate at any point in an illness and can be done along with curative treatment.
The primary goal of hospice care is to help the individual and his/her family to maintain the highest quality of life in the last stages of the illness; without the fear of dying in pain, alone, or without personal dignity.  This includes managing pain and other symptoms of the illness rather than providing treatment for the illness.  Emotional support for the individual and family is also provided.

A team approach is taken when hospice services are rendered.  The team may consist of:

  • Family Members
  • Physicians
  • Home health aides
  • Social workers
  • Massage, physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Nurses
  • Volunteers
  • Physician service
  • 24 hour access to a nurse
Our hospice care is like no other.  At EvergreenChoice we provide elder-care; comforting, dignified and compassionate care for every life we touch. Our hospice caregivers have a strong understanding of the psychological needs for both your loved one as well as the family.
